A very interesting ring made chess book of the Ponziani opening 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3
from the correspondence player David C.Taylor who is now retired from active chess but turned all his energy in to this deep study of the Ponziani. It was Alekhine who played the Ponziani against the Dutch player Oskam (in a Simultan Paris ?) and won in only 13 moves which where published in the Dutch magazine Schaakmat 1951 and in the compresive work from Skinner & Verhoeven unfortunately not covered in this brand new work from Taylor.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 Nf6 4.d4 Nxe4 5.d5 Ne7 6.Nxe5 Ng6 7.Bd3 Nxf2 8.Bxg6 Nxd1 9.Bxf7 Ke7 10.Bg5+ Kd6 11.Nc4+ Kc5 12.Nba3 Nxb2 13.Be3 1-0
The move 3.c3 is characteristic of this opening: the inevitable loss of a tempo proves many times disadvantageous for an open game but than it is black who seizes the initiative. An exciting and instructive line runs after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 d5 4.Bb5 dxe4 5.Nxe5 Qg5 6.Qa4 Qxg2 7.Bxc6 bxc6 8.Qxc6 Kd8 9.Rf1 Bh3 10.Qa8+ Ke7 11.Kd1 Qxf1 12.Kc2 Bf5 13.Na3 Taylor unfortunately only concentrates on the move 13…e3 again not aware of 13…f6!? An invention from GM John Emms (see his book Play the open games, Gambit 2000).
Going through the rich amount of analyses
and computer games you get very quick the feeling that this opening is much
sounder as it reputation and deserves much more attention so I am grateful to
this work from Taylor.
Unfortunately the former USCCC champion is not always aware of the latest developments and no fan of research but did make a very interesting book that is worth buying only the price for a ring bound book (Postpaid US) is for my taste a little too high.
